Due to Bhutan's amazing diversity in animals and plants Bhutan has been recognized as one of the ten global hot spots for environmental conservation. It leads the world with its pristine and intact forest cover. Bhutan's environment is extremely wide ranging for a nation of its size, and experiences extreme variations in both attitude and climate, encompassing the snow capped Himalayas to the steamy jungles of Bhutan's Southern border.
These dramatic differences in the landscape, coupled with an active commitment from Bhutan's Government to sustained development has resulted in Bhutan's environment possessing 60% of the species that can found in the Eastern Himalayans. ![]()
Bhutan has been described as a natural paradise for its rich and pristine biodiversity. Even as the world conservationists fight against the loss of fragile ecosystems, this small Himalayan kingdom is emerging as an example to the international community with more than 72 percent of its land still under forest. The Bhutan government has consciously decided to forego immediate economic gain from exploitation of its natural resources, that many developing nations fall victim too, in order to preserve its environment for long term sustainable benefits.
To date Bhutan possesses;
- more than 100 different kinds of mammal, including the illusive snow leopard, blue sheep and the national animal the Takin.
- 620 different kinds of bird species, of which 15 are highly endangered - including the white bellied heron and phalli's fish eagle
- over 5,400 different plant species, with 750 only to be found in the eastern Himalayas, 50 of which can only be found in Bhutan, 300 known medicinal plants, 46 different species of rhododendrons 600 species of orchid, and of course the blue poppy our national flower.
